At the time of the horrific Childers Backpacker fire in June 2000, PJ Burns Builder was building Coral Cove, and a regular in the town. After negotiations between the owner of the property and the council broke down, Isis Council contacted Steve Burns asking them to meet and discuss the future of the icon. They were looking for a memorial to those lost, a complete rebuild of the Palace to it’s early 1900’s style, and a brand new, state-of-the-art backpacker to be built behind the original building.

An original PJ Burns Builder Plan of the back of the Memorial Building

While it would be one of the biggest tasks PJ Burns had undertaken and certainly the most emotional, they decided they were the people for the job. Steve still tears up talking about the first days onsite clearing through the personal belongings that had all been left exactly as they were when the fire broke out. He personally, carefully, bagged up the items with a hope that they would make it back to those who survived and the families of those who had been lost.

PJ Burns Builder rebuilding the Palace Memorial

The contract on the memorial was $1.2 million. It was a heritage listed rebuild that required a lot of detail, and so they began the painstaking task of refurbishing the entire building to original but modifying every component to meet the current building code. Steve explained, “To give an example, the original handrails had to be perfectly replicated but raised in height to meet today’s standards.”

Steve tells, “The detailed metal ceilings came from Toowoomba. The lead lights in the front window had to be completely restored by a company in Eumundi. The quality of workmanship involved in the rebuild was outstanding, even today, everywhere you look, it is amazing.”

“Overall, it was devastating to think about what happend on the site, but a rebuild we were so happy to be involved with.”

“It is important for us to give something back, but also to prove to ourselves that we are capable of anything

Prime Minister John Howard inspected, toured and opened the new Palace Backpackers hostel and Memorial in Childers, and described the formal opening as a day of celebration, optimism and hope for the south-east Queensland town.

A crowd of Childers locals, school children and backpackers gathered outside the hostel, waiting to catch a glimpse of the Prime Minister on a rare visit to the town.

In his opening speach, John Howard said he hopes the hostel would again become a centre for laughter, happiness and celebration.

The Palace Backpacker is now run as a beautiful boutique motel ‘Childers Oasis Motel’. The memorial above the Childers Information Centre commemorates the victims of the Childers Backpacker Fire and is worth a visit when passing through Childers. It is a beautiful memorial to those backpackers who lost their lives, and is a space where you can feel the heart and soul of the Childers community.

We are passionate about Green Living, sustainable architecture and thoughtful design in our homes, and understand the benefits to be gained from a more sustainable approach to everyday living by protecting and maintaining our natural environment.

The reduction (or prevention where possible) of waste, as well as recycling of materials on construction sites is very important to us. After all, the best environmental and cost-effective solution for reducing waste in our industry is to reduce the amount of waste created.

Pre-Construction Actions

The design stage in an important part of our waste management program. We consider what excess materials are likely to be generated and focus on how the generation of those excess materials can either be avoided of the material can be diverted from landfill

Onsite Waste Management

We are proud to have been working along side local family owned business Chilli Bins for many years, who only use Green Star approved Resource Recovery Centres to assure that we are all doing our part in waste diversion from landfills by 85% of material collected.

Our Construction Supervisors are doing their part with site waste management by following PJ Burns Builder’s waste management plan, coordinating the timing, placing and quality of delivery, avoiding ordering of excess materials, returning packaging where possible, and ensuring the skip bins are placed in locations that are easy for site staff to use the waste facilities.

Undertaking site waste audits to monitor how waste types and quantities to continually look to implement the best practices, is a very important part of our recycling process.

Design with joy – how to create a new home that makes you feel happy!

When designing your new PJ Burns Builder home, consider little things that make you smile. Our team of creative experts can help you incorporate those small details in your home to create that feeling joy, based around current elements of your life that make you feel happy.

No matter how small it seems at the time, we will experience little moments of joy in our everyday life. These small sparks of joy are powerful + when considered for your new home, they will become the building blocks to happiness.

There are a few elements to consider, to simply apply this idea to your new home design. Read on for joy-inducing ideas that might appeal to you.

Rediscover Nature.

Idea: Nature nourishes our souls, so when work (or school) life gets a bit much, we often retreat to nature.

Designer Tip: Bring the inside out by considering your surroundings with the layout and position of your home. Perhaps you have a constant view outside, or established trees on your block – it’s a simple way to bring happy vibes into your home. Don’t overlook indoor plants or a vase full of fresh flowers when decorating.

Let light flood in.

Idea: Natural light + the warmth of the sun are uplifting + energizing.

Designer Tip: Consider the orientation of your home + the position of the natural light to enjoy different spaces, at different times of the day. White or bright internal paint colours will bring visual feshness + warmth into your new PJ Burns Builder home. Keep in mind that during our preliminary site visits, we will inspect + evaluate your home for your first concept, preliminary plans and price, visit our youtube chanel for examples of this.

Create harmony.

Idea: A well balanced life leads to happiness + the same goes when designing your new home.

Designer Tip: Feature pendant lights are a simple + affordable way to bring balance into the design of your new PJ Burns Builder home. Keep in mind that balance in design doesn’t always mean matching or symmetry.

Interior design ideas to elevate your home!

With so many platforms and beautiful images availabile to us daily, it is easy to become overwhelmed by options and choices when it comes to the interior design of your new PJ Burns Builder home. We have broken it down to simple elements and steps for you to consider, when designing and decorating each space of your new PJ Burns Builder home.

Let light in.

Beautiful lighting will make a space, a whilst your floor plan will usually determine your lighting plan, making the most of natural light is always a good idea.

Natural light constantly changes throughout the day, and is one of the lovely and noticable elements to suprise you, when settling into your new home and watching the morning and afternoon light move through each space.

A home that faces north and east, will make the most of our coastal climate, while naturally allowing light and heat flowing through your home. A thoughtfully designed space will take advantage of the natural light during the day.

To create a mood and add ambience, incorporate interesting windows or feature pendants, wall lights, ceiling lights, lamps into your interior design, rather than filling each space with too many downlights.

Designer Tip: As part of the PJ Burns experience, keep in mind that you will be provided with the opportunity to walk through your new home with our experienced electrician, at frame stage, to ensure your new home is transformed into your dream home.

Colour changes everything.

Your colour palette is an important element of interior design and effectivly achieving the style your going for.

The 60/30/10 rule, is popular with interior designers, and rightfully so. The 60 percent refers to your main colour, which acts as the backdrop or anchor for the space you are designing. The 30 percent refers to your secondary colour, of which needs to have it’s own identity while toning harmoniously with your main colour. The 10 percent refers to your statement colour, which depending on your design inspiration is your chance to get creative and add that pop of colour adding character and attention.

When selecting colours, both natural and artificial light will change the way colours appear and feel in each space. For confidence in your decision, order a sample pot or A4 colour swatches via Dulux website to get the most accurate example of the final result.

Designer Tip: As part of the PJ Burns experience, keep in mind that you will be provided with the opportunity to complete a colour consultation with our wonderful interior designer, during the preliminary process, to ensure your vision and design inspiration is brought to life.

Images: Design Inspiration via PJ Burns Facebook

Texture is paramount.

The first thing to remember when it comes to texture within interior design, is balance. Balance your matt stone finishes, with a soft throw or cushion from adairs, your naturally darker materials with a lighter tone of woven rug from rugs of beauty, or your shiny, glossy surface with a stonewashed linen from deiji studios.

Designer Tip: An easy way to incorporate texture into the structure of your new home, is with a feature wall cladding, tile or exposed trusses. Discuss options and costs involved during the designing stage of the process, your options are only limited by your imagination and budget!

Images: Design Inspiration via PJ Burns Facebook

Space.

Arguably the most important consideration in designing a room is how your home and design flows between spaces.

Be mindful how you + your family use the current space you are living in, and visualise your furniture pieces on your floor plan during the preliminary design stage. It is important to leave enough space between significant furniture pieces for your to comfortably transition between spaces.

Designer Tip: Consider unusable space, such as a void or high ceilings and incorporate statement lighting or exposed trusses to bring your new home interior to life.

5 ways to bring your new home to life!

We have created a list and narrowed it down to five things that we encourage you to consider, when designing and planning each space of your new PJ Burns Builder home.

Number One: Let light in.

There are so many styles of windows + creative ways to let light into your new PJ Burns Builder home! Exposed trusses with a feature skylight will enhance your living space and provide so much character, while lovely louvre windows are hard to pass with their so many benefits #feelthebreeze!

Remember, thoughtfully positioned windows will give your home a feeling of space + connect your internal living areas seemly with the outdoors + your natural surroundings.

Images: Design Inspiration via our Instagram Account @pjburnsbuilder

Number Two: Bring in the natural.

Adding a touch of natural fibers instantly brings natural warmth and texture to any space. Think Timber, Wool, Leather, Linen, Cotton and Metals in a fresh colour palette. Organic pieces of handmade furniture are beautiful additions, not to be overlooked and can be incorporated as coffee tables, light fittings, hanging chairs, bed heads or even lounges.

Designer Tip: Visit our ‘Hanging Chairs’ Blog Post for more design inspiration to incorporate organic pieces into your new PJ Burns home.

Images: Design Inspiration via Armadilloandco

Number Three: Utilise your walls.

If you are short on floor space, utilising your walls not only adds interest, it also improves the functionality of your space. Depending on your style, consider a feature brick or cladding wall to add texture + character to the room.

Designer Tip: Frame your cherished photos and arrange them on your walls. You can create a gallery wall with a combination of memories + artwork or simply hang one or two statement pieces.

Images: Design Inspiration via Armadilloandco

Number Four: Add something green.

This season is all about styling your home with lots and lots of greenery, bunches of flowers, hanging plants or potted plants, the options are endless.

Greenery can be incorporated into your new PJ Burns Builder home design by adding a custom made shelf or two to your bedroom, or some open shelves to your kitchen instead of overhead cupboards, the options are only limited by your imagination, and budget.

Keep in mind, not only do plants improve air quality by removing toxins, they instantly add warmth and soften an internal living space.

Images: Design Inspiration via Armadilloandco

Number Five: Focus on flooring.

When it comes to deciding on the flooring of your new home, we are noticing a push towards Vinyl Plank Flooring, and it is not hard to see why. Durable and stylish, our clients love this standard PJ Burns Builder inclusion and appreciate the variety of modern colours to select from when it comes to making final colour selections.

Designer Tip: A rug can dramatically change the look and feel of a room and can give that instant warmth by defining the space. A rug can be the finishing touch to bring a room to life, or you might use it as a starting point, working cushions and artworks back, whichever you choose, with so many options you will find a rug that suits your style and lifestyle. Remember, proportion is everything when selecting a rug to fit your space.
